Mattel recently asked for the public's vote to select the 125th and 126th career for Barbie, who by all accounts originated the whole job-hopping phenomenon.
Most 51-year-olds have had one, two, maybe three careers, but Barbie's has spanned President of the United States (the press called her a little stiff on stage, and First Dude Ken was caught bossing around federal employees via email), astronaut, paratrooper and McDonald's cashier.
According to Reuters, 500,000 votes later, we now have Computer Engineer Barbie, who was designed with the help of the Society of Women Engineers - who hope her binary code-patterned T-shirt, pink-framed glasses and pink laptop help inspire girls to enter the profession. Let's hope they can also stop the profession from using every offensive girlie stereotype out there.
Anchor woman Barbie sounds straight of the 70's too, what with a pink suit, a news folder, camera and microphone. Probably has big hair, too.
I take it Broadcast Network CEO Barbie and Internet Mogul Barbie will be voted on next year.
